About

When I Draw, I See.
When I See, I Become!

I am a Chennai based Artist. I draw, paint and write about Art.

My passion for art , animation and illustration predates my love for anything else and goes  as far back as I can remember. Inspired by the illustrations that adorned the children's story books of an era that is long gone, I always wanted to draw and paint.

Somewhere in the early 90s, I had painfully set aside this love for art while pursuing a career in technology which was driven by a passion in computing, and was very disinterested in art for quite a long while. Around year 2000, while living in the United States, I accidentally discovered Kimon Nicholaides’s writings, whose approach and  teachings changed the way I understood art and it set me on a road of discovery.

After a good number of years working with computers, sometime in 2011, I decided to reduce my time with them as a profession and spend more time on the things I love at a more leisurely fashion.

My approach to art is that Nature provides inspiration and experience and Art enables and enhances the experiences of life. The impressions that life leaves in terms of visual and other sensory input, acts as an ingredient to create unique expressions. I have been painting more in recent years, and the current collection is a mix of representational works which are direct reaction to nature as well as experimental non objective works.

Several influences include Pissaro,  Cezanne, Vermeer and am very intrigued by the writings and works of Wassily Kandinsky and Hans Hoffman.

My Figurative works  focus on the essence and energy and movement and  captures the total all at once spontaneously. Its a very dynamic process of me, my subject and the processes of seeing all become one. Ancient sculptures enchant me, the rhythm inherent in the compositions of Indian sculptures fascinate me.

My Non Objective works are explorations in the elements of art and a sensuous indulgence in them. I create pictures that do not represent anything that is familiar. Words, thoughts, ideas and reason give way to line, form, colors, values, space and texture, and just as a musician keeps adjusting his notes I keep adjusting these elements till I feel somewhere something is right about it..and there I stop.

Decades of practice as a programmer coupled with  traditional art practice  lead me to Generative Art which presents the best of both worlds.

I explore different processes in making marks by developing my own algorithms. I work with the computer in a collaborative manner, where I give enough control through selective direction.

Art is but a part of life.

Life with it's infinite mysteries has been my subject of intrigue from time immemorial. I had a deep desire to understand the physical reality as we experience it, as well as an explanation and meaning for what we call life. My craving for knowing and understanding things has led me from one small thing to the other and eventually to an understanding of the ultimate reality. My questions and cravings disappeared and with the new world view, any sense of purpose and usefulness that I ever had was annihilated. The only act that I could engage myself in was art.

I Hold a Masters Degree in Computer Science and Engineering from College of Engineering, Guindy.
